What is a learning style?

A learning style is a generalized description of the way you receive and process information. Not all people learn alike, of course.

Some people grasp information best by reading, while others learn better through listening or discovering concepts in a hands-on fashion. The way that you prefer to learn is a major contributor to your personality and temperment.

A variety of questionnaires have been developed over the years that help you assess your personality type/learning style preferences. A very popular learning style assessment questionnaire is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

How do I find out what my learning style is?

Dr. Keirsey provides an online personality questionnaire, the Keirsey Character Sorter, that will tell you which one of the 16 categories of the MBTI you are most consistent with.

The US Department of the Interior provided a chart that shows, based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) categories, what types of careers that may be enjoyable for those within a particular MBTI category:

There is a free online Personal Learning Style Inventory at HowToLearn.com that will score your preferred learning style of visual, kinesthetic or auditory.

Take control of your learning--in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Whether you're studying for school, for work, or for yourself - discover the ways you learn best, and how to use them more often.

Two longtime educators--Mariaemma Willis and Victoria Kindle-Hodson--suggest that there are actually five aspects to a student's learning style beyond the simple modes of visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. Their "learning style profile" takes into account a child's talents, interests, preferred learning environment, and disposition, as well as the three more familiar modes. Written as a workbook, with a series of do-it-yourself assessments, the guide Discover Your Child's Learning Style : Children Learn in Unique Ways offers parents a chance to diagnose their child's learning style in all five areas. A chart of activities accompanies each style.

Hailed by educators throughout the world, Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences challenges the widely help notion that intelligence is a single general capacity possessed by every individual to a greater or lesser extent. Amassing a wealth of evidence, Gardner posits the existence of a number of intelligences that ultimately yield a unique cognitive profile for each person.
